About This Site

Top Travel Essentials is written for people who take a handful of trips a year, a drive to see family, a cruise, a flight to a wedding, and would rather spend the trip enjoying it than fighting their luggage. We publish first-hand reviews, side-by-side comparisons and plain-English how-to guides on packing cubes, travel neck pillows, digital luggage scales, hanging toiletry bags and universal travel adapters, tested on real trips by carry-on travelers.

Travel Safety

The articles on this site share personal experience with everyday travel accessories. They are not medical, legal or electrical advice. Please read every product's own instructions and warnings before you use it.

Electrical adapters. A plug adapter changes the shape of the plug, not the voltage. Check the label on every device before you plug it in abroad: many hair dryers, curling irons and older appliances are single-voltage and can overheat, melt or start a fire on 220 to 240 volt power without a proper converter. Never exceed an adapter's rated wattage, do not daisy-chain adapters or power strips, unplug when you leave the room, and stop using any adapter that gets hot, sparks or smells of burning.

Batteries and airline rules. Power banks and spare lithium batteries generally must travel in carry-on bags, not checked luggage, and airlines set limits on their size. Rules change and differ by airline and country, so check with your carrier and the TSA before you fly.

Long sitting and circulation. Long flights and long drives raise the risk of blood clots for some people. Get up and move when you safely can, stay hydrated, and talk to your doctor before a long trip if you have a history of clots, recent surgery, are pregnant or take medication that affects circulation. A neck pillow or compression product is a comfort aid, not a medical treatment.

Lifting and luggage weight. Lift bags with your legs, not your back, and ask for help with heavy cases and overhead bins. A luggage scale reading can differ slightly from the airline's own scale, so leave yourself a small margin under the limit.

Toiletries and liquids. Follow current carry-on liquid rules, keep medications in their labeled containers, and keep anything you cannot do without in your carry-on rather than your checked bag.
